Are real stories even fun to read? How could they be fun if they weren’t made up in someone’s head?
The answer is because real stories are where the made up stories come from.
Every pretend, silly, sad, and emotional story you’ve ever read was inspired by real life people, places or events. Crazy, right?!

Nonfiction Picture Books!
You might be thinking, how could there be picture books that are nonfiction and the answer is…through magic! The magic of writing and drawing true stories, history and facts. Don’t tell the other sections, but these are my favorite. 🤫
First up, a comprehensive look at life on earth by Oliver Jeffers. In Here We Are, Oliver guides young readers through the basics of what our environment is like here on Earth. It’s full of fun and beautiful illustrations along with quippy writing that is sure to delight. Bonus: it’s been turned into a short film and Apple TV+ and is absolutely lovely.
Along the same vein of living here on earth, with other people, we have Tomorrow I’ll Be Kind and Tomorrow I’ll Be Brave. These are such sweet books about ways to be your best self!
Next, a new-to-our-house book that would be so fun if you’re trying to plan family road trips or lower budget vacations! It’s 50 Adventures in the 50 States by Kate Siber and illustrated by Lydia Hill.
Another great nonfiction picture book, that I just realized is by the same author, and that stretches across the United States is National Parks of the U.S.A. This book is especially fun if you’ve visited any of the National Parks, my kids love to see all the things they’ve seen in real life in print!
This book has an accompanying journal by the artist! Eek! And a PUZZLE! Couldn’t add to my cart fast enough. Wait, wait, wait, I was scrolling and this author also created a little book of postcards!
Young Nonfiction Chapter Books!
There are so many of these that look like so much fun! The first I’m pointing you to is one I am personally interested in reading, Amelia Lost by Candace Fleming, a tale of Amelia Earhart, her great accomplishments and her legacy. I would love this book!
Now, a fun series that your history-loving reader will eat right up, The History Smashers! Each book takes on a different part of history and gives you the facts while also debunking myths and tall tales about that part of history!

Middle Grade, Middle Nonfiction
One of my favorite nonfiction books and film adaptations from last year was The Boys on the Boat. So, imagine my delight when I discovered the Young Reader’s version of this great story! A rowing team that literally pulls together to become the greatest.
Young Adult Delight
This one comes from a member of our community who said it was their most recent favorite nonfiction and the premise has me already hooked! It is Upstairs at the White House by J.B West and Mary Lynn Kotz.
I can’t wait for you to get these into your hands and onto your shelves, I just know there’s something here for everyone if you look closely enough.
Again, if you are looking for longer lists of recommendations you can find that here!
That’s it! Thank you so much for the privilege of your time!
